North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov was founded on October, 2011 as a result of merger of two oldest medical educational institutions of St. Petersburg: SPbMAPS and SPbSMA named after I.I. Mechnikov.


On new logo of the University there are three dates: 1885 - year of foundation of Clinical institute of Grand Princess Elena Pavlovna – Leningrad State Institute of  – SPbMAPS, 1907 – year of foundation of the Psychoneurological Institute, which medical faculty in 1920 was transformed into the independent higher education institution – State Institute of medical knowledge further it changed its names: 2nd Leningrad Medical Institute, Leningrad Sanitary and Hygienic Medical Institute, SPbSMA named after I.I. Mechnikov; and 2011 – year of foundation of  North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov.
The main goal of integration is to keep traditions of both high school and postgraduate education. The merger will allow to create the united educational programme including pre-higher education, then from higher education institution to postgraduate education – all process will be organized in the joint standard.

 

 

Main types of University activity are:

  • training of citizens on educational programmes of the higher, postgraduate and additional professional education;
  • carrying-out of pilot study, basic and applied scientific researches, clinical researches and tests;
  • development and introduction of the latest scientific achievements, new methods of diagnostics and treatment;
  • rendering of specialized, including hi-tech medical aid to the population.


North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov accepts for training persons having secondary education or higher professional education.
